I’ll Remember You
by
Melissa Ann Goodwin

I’ll remember you

on the rocks at Gray’s,

your knitting needles clacking

and the seagulls flocking.

When sunny days seem to last forever

and thunder rolls

like a distant drummer,

I’ll remember you,

in summer.

I’ll remember you

at the kitchen door,

as I waved goodbye

‘neath an autumn sky.

When leaves are piled and chestnuts fall

with bittersweet vines

and popcorn balls,

I’ll remember you,

in fall.

I’ll remember you

knitting mittens

by a fire warm

in a snowy storm.

When stars shine bright like cosmic glitter

and snowflakes fly

and winds blow bitter,

I’ll remember you,

in winter.

I’ll remember you

on days in May,

when poppies bloom

and winter’s gloom is left behind.

When all the world

feels fresh and new

And robins sing,

I’ll remember you,

in spring.

June 1940, age 14. Just before returning to the U.S. from Wales at the start of WWII

Probably around 1938 or 1939, near Chester England,.

  1. Lovely tribute to your mother. I look at photos of my mother as a young woman and wish I'd known her then but I was privileged to know her for most of my life.

    1. Thanks, my friend. I wish I'd known her then too. I've had the good luck to find a woman who was her friend at the Blue Coat School, and that's been a lovely gift. We lost Mom too soon to Alzheimer's - a long 10-year slide.

  4. That's so beautiful, Melissa. I lost my mom this year on February 5 and miss her every day. It's hard, but the memories carry us through.

    1. I'm so sorry Lynn. It is hard, isn't it? I thought with Mom "gone" so long to Alzheimer's, it wouldn't be as hard. But it was. I am in a good place, but remembering her today and allowing myself to let it be okay to be sad about those who are gone and life gone by. The memories are the sweet in the bittersweet. xo

  6. Dear Melissa, . . . what a touching tribute to your mother. My mother died at age 58 in 1968. So it's been forty-four years. And yet still I think of her almost daily and find myself grateful for her love and for all she taught me. My response to life is one I learned from her. How blessed we are both to have such wonderful mothers. Peace.

    1. Dee, I'm sorry you lost your mom at such a young age. I don't think we ever stop thinking about our mom's do you? Yes, we were very lucky - I know that not everyone is, and I was lucky to have mine for a long time. Your words are always a comfort.

  7. Lovely tribute to your mother. There are so many memories we take from our childhood with our moms...things that to others may seem unimportant, but that are so significant to us. Hold those memories close.
