We had a lot of fun with yesterday's post about "signs!" Glad to know that I'm not the only who

a) talks to people who are not visibly present
and
b) believes that things that seem like coincidences are actually signs.

Read back through yesterday's comments for some GREAT stories about people who've gotten signs, or better yet, visits from deceased loved ones.

I can't say that I've ever had the experience of thinking that my mom or dad was right there with me, visiting. But my husband and I did live for a while in a lovely old Victorian home in Maine, where we definitely felt the presence of the past owners. I'll tell you those stories another day, because I need to find pictures of the place to add to the story. They were nice visitors, benevolent presences, not scary ones.

I've been bringing to mind Dad's advice to "STOP IT!" every chance I get. Most recently, I used it in conjunction with my ongoing struggle with kicking into handstand. I think I mentioned that I can DO a beautiful handstand once I'm in it, but I have "issues" with kicking up. I'm pretty sure it's a fear of hitting the wall hard and falling over. The reason I think that is because it's actually happened and it scares the heck out of you - and the person next to you! So I guess I'm not afraid of the handstand, I'm afraid of the wall ....

But if I took my handstand baggage to Bob Newhart, psychiatrist, and asked him to analyze my problem and help me overcome my fear of kicking up, you know what he'd say? He's say:

STOP IT!!!!

So yesterday, every time I practiced kicking up, I said the words "stop it" to myself. As in, "Stop holding back", and "Stop being a baby." And you know what? Up I'd go. Seriously. I kid you not.

Feel free to use the STOP IT technique to overcome whatever is holding you back - no charge for the therapy!

  1. Fantastic. I might try it - I've hit a wall with weight training at the moment, and I'm convincing myself I've lost strength. I'll 'stop it' next time I'm in the gym and seeing if I can't punch out another couple of reps!

I wonder if it would work if I said STOP IT every time I reached for food that a) wasn't good fo rme and b) I didn't need? Of course, I wouldn't be too likely to say it then would I?

    1. I think it's about quieting ALL those little voices in our heads that are giving us bad advice!

  3. Oh good. Try as I might, yesterday I just could not comment on your signs post. Blessed blogger kept tying me up in a loop. So, late to the party, I add I have always done said things to myself like 'if I see three magpies between here and home then I should ...' It has always seemed liked an adolescent thing to do, but I continue.
And I am with mybabyjohn/Delores, I really need a STOP IT theme to run through my brain.
    Have a great day.

  4. Ha! Thanks for the free therapy! It's funny how people's words stay with us. I find myself hearing and repeating my dad, who is still around. Those lines from childhood stick!

  6. OMG! Of course I had to back up and read your yesterday's post, too. I'm sure we must be related somewhere along the line. Needless to say, I'm not much a believer in coincidence. We just need to be open and aware.

  7. Dear Melissa,
Sorry to have been a way for several days. I'm working with someone on a project and trying to do my own writing so getting to the blogs I really like sometimes takes a back seat--unfortunately! After Dulcy, the cat with whom I lived for 17 1/2 years, died, she visited me many times. I would be in bed and could feel the blanks and the mattress move as she stepped across them. At first, I was frightened, not knowing what was happening. Then I realized it was Dulcy, come to comfort me, and I rejoiced.

    Peace.

    1. Oh my - what a wonderful story! And no worries about the visits - we all go through our flows of being able to visit ... and not ... Today I am csaptive at the RV dealer where they are putting something on the car that allows the RV to haul it. So today, I have visiting time!

    1. It's amazing how it can help. It just blocks out the other thoughts, and it makes you laugh at yourself too.
